The Fire From France: Phoenix Rises with Musictoday

The band known as Phoenix has officially joined the Musictoday team! This French group has been together for over twenty-five years and throughout this period has released seven unique albums. Phoenix, which began in 1995 with just four friends living in Versailles, has been through many hardships and extremes throughout their time together. This includes singer Thomas Mars living in Napa Valley during wildfire season, impacting his ability to travel and record in person with the band. Like many artistic groups, having all band members present is key to the creation of Phoenix’s music. This is especially true since all four band members; Thomas Mars, brothers Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai, and Deck D’arch, had not been apart for longer than four months, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This ability to remain unified is a rare one in the music community as listeners often see their favorite bands disassemble. This trend can be seen through the Beatles back in 1974 as well as in the present day music industry with the once incredibly popular teen band “One Direction.” This particular disassembly has now launched into the single careers of both previous band members Harry Styles and Zayn Malik. However, although the four friends of Phoenix struggled through the pandemic in similar manners to all of us; absent travel plans, laggy Zoom calls, etc., the band was able to accommodate the world’s struggle in a rather finer establishment.

Phoenix had the special opportunity to record their latest album, Alpha Zulu, in the world’s largest art museum, the Louvre. Since the museum was shut down during the pandemic, the artists were granted access to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs to record their album. The inspiration birthed from their immersion in The Louvre’s collection is apparent in the tracks of Alpha Zulu which fans can order on several formats in the Phoenix Official Store. Phoenix lovers can also shop lots of other distinctive goods including Phoenix branded sake cups, high quality apparel, and LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, PHOENIX!, the first book by the band which includes an autographed bookplate.
