In the Intern Spotlight blog series, Musictoday’s summer interns reflect on their experiences working for the company.
My name is Walker Neill and I am a recent graduate from Elon University with a major in Sport and Event Management and minor in Business Administration. I began interning with Musictoday at the end of May as a summer intern for three days a week. As a Marketing Intern, I get to interact with the marketing team on a daily basis, but we aren’t limited to just Marketing tasks. One of the best things about this internship has been the flexibility to work with all of the departments at Musictoday to get a better feel of what we do as a whole. While most of our tasks are marketing related, we’ve gotten to have training sessions with a lot of individuals, as well as doing some work in the warehouse. As we go around and meet everyone working here, the one common thread is that everyone wishes they got to have an opportunity like this when they began at Musictoday. We’re encouraged to have a “minor” outside of our “major” of Marketing, so I’ve been trying to take every opportunity to absorb everything I’m learning because this is such a unique and rewarding internship.
Just about every day we get to meet with someone to learn something new, such as meeting with the Marketing Analyst to discuss Facebook Business or with the Senior Email Specialist to learn about coding emails. These are the types of things that you don’t get to learn in school but are extremely valuable to know in order to continue in the professional world.
For marketing, we’ve done a lot of work in the Search Engine Optimization world, as well as learning to create emails, working on Musictoday’s social media presence, creating case studies, and much more. Outside of Marketing, we’ve gotten to meet with Business Development to give our input on potential new clients, as well as going over the Musictoday sales deck to give any suggestions we might have to update it. We also got to spend some time in the warehouse during a few crazy days when there were a ton of orders coming in. But overall, it’s just been nice to not be limited to one area but rather get to experience all of the different aspects of Musictoday and what we have to offer to our clients. I think it has been very beneficial for me in understanding what we do and hopefully, I can take this knowledge I’ve received and use it to benefit Musictoday as well.
